With the new year in sight, people are beginning to think about expectations and prospects for 2019. After all, a new year means new opportunities, fresh starts, and perhaps even a change in décor. This year, designers featured at the High Point Market shared insights and inside pointers, for the top trends, they expect to see in 2019.
For those unfamiliar with the High Point Market, it’s the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world. Twice a year, a crowd of 75,000 buyers, designers, journalists, paint contractors and architects gather in High Point, North Carolina to view the featured pieces. Needless to say, the designs featured at High Point are at the vanguard of the furnishing industry, and often-times indicate where fashions are headed in the coming years. Let’s take a quick look at a few of the top trends from this year’s High Point Market Authority, and perhaps predict where things are headed for 2019.
Nine Take-Away Trends from the High Point Market
The Re-Emergence of Stone
2018 saw an explosion of crisp stone-featured designs. Elizabeth Scruggs of Superior Construction and Design was happily surprised by the growing popularity of concrete finishes—especially featured as furniture top-pieces. Likewise, a number of manufacturers at High Point this year were offering concrete accessories, such as concrete table-tops, large-scale concrete vases, and even bar stools.
Designer Eric Ross, of Eric Ross Interiors, is excited to see the return of what he likes to call “pretty” designs. What exactly is “pretty”? He describes it as a softer and more feminine touch, specifically in terms of colors and shades. Pastels and less-abrasive colors are being favored heavily in all types of furniture (and for good reason—the gentleness of these so-called “pretty” shades is warm and comforting, and creates a welcome environment for guests).
The Personal Touch
Designer Linda Holt considers the personalization of home décor a fashion to watch for, “I’ve seen lots of personalization options as a trend”. This can range from simple touches or more complex personally significant customizations. A great example of this is John Strauss Furniture’s customized credenza, a remarkable blend of wood and metal finished with a soft image of Lake Michigan on the front.
Yellow, Yellow, and more Yellow
Yellow is popping up everywhere, according to Tina Nicole, furniture designer and co-founder of Nathan Anthony furniture. In agreement with Erik Ross’ forecast for “pretty” shades in 2019, the color that’s really growing in podiatry is a more subdued and softer version of yellow, not exactly the “in your face” highlighted shade that we’ve seen in years-past.
Dark Wood, Clean Finish
Strong, dark woods have been “in” for quite a few years now, and professional Carla Aston of Carla Aston Design doesn’t see that changing in the coming year. Darker woods like chestnut and mahogany are being used in ways that are clean and elegant, yet refined as well. They’re a strong and unifying feature to living and dining room areas.
The Rise of End-Tables
End-tables were a growing trend in 2017-2018, and were featured heavily at High Point this year. Claire Jefford of Claire Jefford Design points out that manufacturers are beginning to focus on smaller, crafty pieces made from a variety of materials. Many of these tables are featured with small carvings, metallic accents, or subtle inlays. Consumers seem to appreciate these small touches, which make the fur nature appear more personalized and technically crafted.
Not just any Leathers
Some designers, such as Cheryl Kees Clendenon of In Detail Interiors, claim to see a sharp increase in leathers, specifically distressed leathers. These materials add a vintage, aged, or even rugged feel to living-room furniture, and blend well with more saturated colors. Again, they give that “warn” feel that seems to be highly sought-after lately.
Autumn Shades , All-Year-Long
The traditional colors of fall-time have been a mainstay in interior décor for decades. As other trends tend to wax and wane, why is it that autumnal color remains popular year-after-year? Part of the reason is their “natural” feel. Soft reds and oranges, light-moderate browns, and of course yellows are a hit for any time-of-year, but especially around the late-summer months.
Many of the 2019 trends discussed here focus on a particular shade or color palate. However, Michelle Workman of Michelle Workman Interiors says one trend she sees is not exactly a certain color or material, but rather a feeling. What might be the feeling of 2019? According to workman, furniture manufacturers are starting to capture the sentiment of escapism in their work—for instance, products with light and breezy finishes, or made with wistful pastel fabrics.
Considering these insights, we see a few general patterns. The first has to do with colors: light, soft, and welcoming shades are definitely in the forecast for 2019. Erik Ross’ idea of “pretty” colors is corroborated by other’s predictions of light yellows, soft autumn shades, and even Michelle Workman’s feeling of escapism. Plan to see lighter, more gentle furnishings in the coming years.
Secondly, the idea of “raw, but refined” is something to keep in mind. Designs that can be both natural, but still concise and bold are growing in popularity. We see this in the emergence off store accents, granite features, and the utilization of strong, bold dark-woods. The High Point Market is typically a harbinger of what’s to come. In 2019, look for these trends to make a splash in the furnishings industry.
